Course Outline

This is a qualification for those engaged in driving operation job roles within the transport and logistics industry.

It involves a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader related activities involving known routines, methods and procedures, with some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures and within known time constraints.

The course will be provided as a blended delivery with the theory component being conducted in person or online and practical components are completed on your worksite. Practical assessments and logbooks are required for verification of competency for subjects in this course.

Course Content

Trainees are required to complete a total of 15 units of competency comprising:

  • 5 core units listed below, plus
  • 1 driver awareness elective unit from the driver awareness elective units listed below, plus
  • 9 general elective units.

Up to 3 of the elective units may be selected from any relevant nationally endorsed Training Package or accredited course. The elective units must contribute to the vocational outcomes of the qualification. Where a prerequisite is attached to a unit it is identified by the symbol ∟

Pre-Requisite Requirements

Assessment

  • Trainees will be assessed by short answer questions and case study/scenario problems.
  • A significant portion of this course will be conducted as practical training, requiring minimum hours and use of a hour log.

Core Units

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to carry out inspection of a commercial vehicle, including hauling units and any attached trailer, in accordance with relevant workplace procedures.

It includes conducting routine checks, cleaning vehicles, ensuring all specified safety requirements are met and ensuring vehicles are operational according to workplace procedures.

Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision, and with duty of care for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to maintain the safety of and to operate, a commercial vehicle across a variety of job roles.

It includes monitoring traffic and associated equipment, managing vehicle condition and performance, and effectively managing hazardous situations.

Driving must be carried out in accordance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority licence requirements and regulations.

Driving is performed with limited supervision, and with duty of care responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit. Provisional car licence must be held prior to commencement of this unit of competency.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to shift materials safely using manual handling methods.

It includes assessing the risks associated with relocating the load, planning the relocation process and carrying out the relocation in accordance with the plan. Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations concerning the manual handling and movement of loads.

Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to follow work health and safety (WHS)/occupational, health and safety (OHS) procedures.

It includes following workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control, contributing to WHS/OHS management arrangements and completing WHS/OHS records.

Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment. It involves applying established WHS/OHS and hazard minimisation principles and procedures to conduct workplace activities.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to apply fatigue management strategies within the transport and logistics industry.

It includes identifying and acting on signs of fatigue and implementing appropriate strategies to minimise fatigue during work activities, in particular when operating equipment, trains, vehicles, load shifting equipment, marine vessels and aircraft.

Work is undertaken in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, codes and guidelines.

Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.

Driver awareness elective units

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to apply low risk car driving behaviours.

It includes applying relevant legislation applicable to low risk car driving, applying low risk car driving behaviours and strategies. It also includes explaining risk factors that contribute to collisions or incidents when driving a car and applying operation and car control skills.

This includes higher-order skills involving broad cognitive, technical, communication and vehicle management. It also requires knowledge about hazard perception, risk control and low risk driving behaviour, judgement, decision making and multi-tasking that builds on driver licence requirements across a range of vehicles and driving situations.

This unit applies to car driving trainers.

Low risk car driving behaviours are applied without supervision.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to apply low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours.

It includes applying relevant legislation applicable to low risk operation of a heavy vehicle, inspecting vehicle and securing load for low risk transportation of goods/cargo, and applying low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours. It also includes applying low risk heavy vehicle driving strategies, explaining risk factors that contribute to collisions or incidents when driving a heavy vehicle, and applying heavy vehicle operation and control skills.

This includes higher-order skills involving broad cognitive, technical, communication and vehicle management. It also requires knowledge about hazard perception, risk control and low risk driving behaviour, judgement, decision making and multi-tasking that builds on basic driver licence requirements across a nominated heavy vehicle class and driving situations.

This unit applies to heavy vehicle drivers required to apply low risk operating driving behaviours.

Low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours are applied without supervision.

Elective units will be discussed with you as these are specialist subjects and will be dependent on your chosen career path.

Training is adaptable and varied depending on electives chosen.
