Subject Outline

Acquire an understanding of the hazards and controls utilised and best work procedures to operate safely in, when working in confined spaces.

This subject is a requirement for all persons who are required to enter a confined space. Participants will learn to identify hazards, conduct risk assessments and obtain work permits for confined space operations along with how to operate various confined space safety equipment.

Subject Content

This subject includes:
  • knowledge of legislative requirements, identification of hazards, applicable control measures, monitoring and testing requirements of working in confined spaces.
  • responsibilities and duties of people who enter the confined space or are conducting observation duties
  • basic information regarding gases, their cause and harmful effects; the use of gas detection equipment and the safety checks and certificates required for such work
  • legal documentation requirements, definitions and consideration for entry
  • safety measures such as atmospheric testing beforehand to ensure it is safe for work, and how to facilitate better ventilation if necessary
  • undertaking of confined space rescue processes

This Subject does not cover the verifications or gas test equipment specifics.  The participant in this subject has knowledge of, not authority to use this equipment.

Pre-Requisite Requirements

  • You must be over 18 years of age to complete this Subject
  • You must be able to provide government ID (Photo ID preferred)
  • USI ID (Australia)
  • CPCCWHS1001 (Prepare to work safely in the construction industry) or
  • CPCWHS1001

Assessment

Trainees will be assessed by short answer and multiple-choice questions and use of practical exercises.
