Subject Outline

This course outlines the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who are required or may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Subject Content

This Subject will cover:

  • Recognise and assess an emergency situation
  • Ensure the safety for self, bystanders, and casualty
  • Seek assistance from the emergency services
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines 
  • Obtain consent from casualty where possible
  • Manage the casualty in a respectful manner
  • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions
  • Accurately convey the incident details to emergency services
  • Monitor the condition of the casualty and respond in accordance with first aid principles
  • Accurately report details of incidents in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures
  • Importance of completing applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies
  • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required
  • Recognise the possible psychological impacts the incident may have on self and other rescuers and seek help

Pre-Requisite Requirements

  • You must be 14 years of age to complete this course unsupervised (under 14 must be supervised)
  • You must be able to provide government ID (Photo ID preferred)
  • USI ID (Australia)

Assessment

Trainees will be assessed by short answer and multiple-choice questions and use of practical exercises.
